Thanks for the suggestion! I tried your solution with a few different
configurations but i couldn't get it to work. Maybe it has something to
do with the Molokai colorscheme i'm currently using. One strange thing
about that (or maybe i simply don't understand it) is it's definition
for StatusLine:

hi StatusLine guifg=#455354 guibg=fg
hi StatusLineNC guifg=#808080 guibg=#080808

It defines the background as 'fg'. When i use fg in User1 it simply is
white (which is indeed the default color of the normal text). I also
tried the real color (#465457) as bg for User1 for your solution, but
then User1 has always that background color (bot in StatusLine and
StatusLineNC).
I'll use a background color for now, as this seems a lot more complex as
it should be...
