It isn't odd if you consider how vim parses these lines:

g/src=""/s//\='src="'.g:imglist[i].'"'/g
let i+=1

is equivalent to:

fun! Foo()
  s//\='src="'.g:imglist[i].'"'/g
endf

g/src=""/call Foo()
let i+=1

while

g/src=""/s//\='src="'.g:imglist[i].'"'/g | let i+=1

is equivalent to

fun! Foo()
  s//\='src="'.g:imglist[i].'"'/g
  let i+=1
endf

g/src=""/call Foo()
