In fact, any new buffer I open view ":new" or ":vert new" seems to
have foldcolumn=5. Perhaps I did something unintended when I issued
":windo set foldcolumn=5". It seemed appropriate at the time, since
all the buffers were code buffers at the time. But I don't want
foldcolumn=5 to be the default!
