'f' across lines without search

Is there a way (or a mapping) to use 'f' and 'F' across lines? I know
I can search for the single character, but then to keep the cursor at
that point I have to hit <ENTER> (AFAIK) which invokes the search
highlighting, which I generally like, just not in this use case. I
have a shortcut mapped to turn highlighting off, but this seems like
it should be something I can do with 'f' and 'F' or some equivalent...
