The thread included a patch by Christian Brabandt that added an option
'splitvertical', and a :horizontal command (counterpart to :vertical):

As noted in that message, it's unlikely to make it into 7.3, but seeing
as how we're at patch #364, work on 7.4 can't be *too* far down the
road.
