I can confirm that the same works on MacVim snapshot 64 on OS X
10.7.4.

Have you checked that 'beval' and 'bexpr' are set properly once you've
started vim? Try

:set beval?
:set bexpr?

Vim should respond with "ballooneval" and "balloonexpr=SimpleBalloon()
", respectively.
