Hm... I think my last post disappeared, somehow. Anyway, a rewrite:
I am opening files by pressing <CR> as well. While playing around with my vimrc, I discovered that NETRW will behave as intended with netrw_browse_split=4, but using 0 or 3 will trigger listing of its buffers, even when using :ls.
Also, I'm glad you found my tab mapping useful!
