Well, it seems like I *didn't* have a clue... ISTR that it *was* intermittent, and this morning, without any symlinks in place , and all files using Unix naming standards, I got the same cygwin message again (although rather than referring to 'vimfiles' in the error, it mentioned '.vim')

So I've gone back to symlinking unix names to windows names, which also should stop me having to tidy out the windows ve rsions of the files that keep on being restored from my roaming profile.
