I started around 6 months ago with Vim. I would say the first thing you must master is the movement keys. Seriously until moving around a file feels comfortable you're going to be absolutely miserable. Check out : help usr_03. Start small, movement, substitution, searches, and quickly you'll find you look up what you need most and you'll have it down.
