E325 even with 'vim -R'

Hi,

I would like to start a new vim session on an already open file. I am explicitly invoking the second vim instance in readonly mode, either with 'view' or 'vim -R'. My question is: Why do I still get the E325 error? I am already asking vim to start readonly. This is pretty annoying. I found a group post that suggests a .vimrc entry that sort of fixes this, but it seems like broken behavior to me...
