Vim's idea of what terminal you have, and what you've got, doesn't match. Firstly, does the problem occur with
vim -u NONE
If it doesn't, something in your .vimrc (or a plugin) is confusing things.
If it does, which terminal app? (I mean, is it gnome-terminal, konsole...) If it is an actual xterm, what does xterm -v say? And what does
env | grep TERM
at the shell prompt say?
