Are you using a filename after the :w ?

":w" with no arguments should save the current file under its existing
name and (if you have write permission, and in particular if the file is
not readonly) give no error.

":w filename.ext" and ":saveas filename.ext" will fail with E13 if
filename.ext already exists: you must use ":w! filename.ext" or
":saveas! filename.ext" if you want to override an existing file.

You can also use ":wq" or ":x" (still with no arguments) to save the
file (with no name change) and close the window in one operation.
