Certain settings can make it more (or less) responsive. As a
starting point, what does the following return:

:set lazyredraw? rnu?

Turning 'lazyredraw' on and turning off relative line-numbering
may speed things up if either of them are set to the opposite.

Also, it might help to know whether you're running gvim or under
a terminal (and if so, which: xterm, rxvt, Gnome Terminal,
Konsole, etc; also if using screen/tmux).
