You ask quite a few interesting questions here. Please present
them more clearly, with examples, because it's not fair that
everyone reading them has to struggle to work out what is

For example, you gave this command embedded in some text:

%s/"a search string"/\=string2float(submatch(0)) [+-]nr/g

Why not give a simple example of what you actually mean?

Give a command (the simpler the better) that actually works,
and some short sample text that the command operates on to
illustrate the problem.
