The first thing I'd do is try changing the "exe" to "echo" to see
what commands are actually being executed. As best I can tell,
it *should* work as you intend, not as you experience.
If that doesn't work, I'd try changing "gdbset" to "echo" and see
what the shell is seeing.
I'd expect that at some point in here, you'll see something that
doesn't make sense.
