As an addendum, I would also take issue with your impression that Emacs
is "obsolete and weird". While you may not find a lot of Emacs support
or advice on the Vim mailing list, I'd argue that the two editors are at
roughly the same level of obsolescence and weirdness, just in different
ways. They are profoundly different in design philosophy, however, and
many people do find that they personally prefer one over the other.
Perhaps you should just give Emacs a try, since it is certainly well
known to have good support for interactive Lisp environments. It seems
that you don't already have a significant investment of time using
either editor, so why not just take the path of least resistance for
your current task?
