yes +clientserver is included in the vim. i pasted the :version output
in my original post.

the following is my version.

VIM - Vi IMproved 7.3 (2010 Aug 15, compiled Mar  21 2013 08:06:32)

All the examples in the docs use gvim.  Maybe --servername is ignored unless you start vim in GUI mode?  (or when used in conjunction with --remote)
