For me it does. But it may be because Mozilla browsers (SeaMonkey and,
I think, Firefox) try pefixing www. by default when the raw domain
name isn't found.
See the following preferences in about:config (which, in SeaMonkey,
have default values as shown):
browser.fixup.alternate.enabled
true
browser.fixup.alternate.prefix
www.
browser.fixup.alternate.suffix
.com
Non-Mozilla browsers may or may not have a similar mechanism,
depending on the browser.
