The error message seems badly formatted. At which column is the "^"
placed?
Anyway, the following characters could cause problems in that
expression: |, ", '
You should be able to solve the problem by properly escaping those
characters somehow.
I'd suspect the value of &shellxquote to be wrong. If you check :h
sxq, you'll see that it should include " if &shell is some sort of sh
derivate.
