unable to map

Hallo,

I am trying to map <M-Space> to <C-p> in insert mode:
imap <M-Space> <C-p>

This doesn't work. All i get, when <M-Space> ist pressed is the
character "Â".
The key combination <C-Space> works perfectly. However i would really
would like to use <M-Space> (it is hardcoded in my brain from emacs).

I would apriciate any tips or hints very much.
