To expand on this, you can also usually change the contents as well, not just append.

For example, type :let @+=' and then type CTRL-R CTRL-R + to get the current contents of the + register. Follow it up with a ' and press enter.

This works unless you have a single quote actually in the register. For that situation, just go back and put a second single quote right next to it.
