I've tried other variants of things in .htaccess files but it never
seemed to work. The permission on .htaccess, btw, is rw-r--r--, so that
isn't the problem, and so I suspect that my host is preventing .htaccess
from being useful. I may switch to a Joomla-based system on a different
host sometime in the future; I'm still (slowly) working on the site.
Hopefully these issues will then get cleared up.
