Hi Eleanor,
if I understand you correctly (I am no native English speaker) you
want (for example) submit "ls -lr" from the commandline of vim and
read back the listing into vims buffer?
If so, this may help:
:r! ls -l
Another way to accomplish this may be the "redir" command which is
much more powerful and described after submitting
:h redir
