Try setting your External Editor preferences to call gvim with not only
--nofork (or -f) but also a full path, i.e., not just
gvim --nofork
but something like
/usr/local/bin/gvim -f
or
C:\PROGRA~1\vim\vim73\gvim.exe -f
etc.
