A different approach is to do one's pasting in insert mode via i_CRTL-R
and friends.

Pros:
No complicated remapping and should work out of the box, whatever the
terminal..
Cons:
The 'R' and the 'O/P' keys are far apart on the keyboard (but easier
to reach than a laptop's half-size Insert key).
