First problem with these mappings:
:nmap allows recursive mappings. Use :nnoremap instead, so that you
can legally use '*' in the right-hand-side.
Second problem:
The syntax for CTRL-O is <C-O>. So, your mapping would become:
nnoremap * *<C-O>
This will only copy the word into the search. You will now need to use
a different method to actually jump to the next hit, like using the
'n' command in normal mode.
