INSERT mode

For years I have been using vi, and when you
move the cursor in vim, it stays in insert mode.

I find this is OK if I am doing something simple, like writing a C
program.
But if I am trying to think and write something in tex for instance,
it gets me every time
and I start typing vi command mode stuff into my tex

It is driving me fucking mental.

Is there anyway vim can be told to leave insert mode when a cursor jey
is being pressed ?
Or is there a way to turn it back toi proper vi mode ?
I can live without the colours and the bracket highlighting.
