While not my first choice I could maintain this as a set of patches against the official release of vim. But obviously I would much prefer it this became part of the official vim! :)
 

My suggestion would be to start by getting a good feel for how
many source files and #ifdef features would be involved.

This is a pretty big task all of it self. But sure, it's a good early step as soon as I have found someone to work together with.
 

Also, think about compatability with existing behaviour. For example,
when multiple windows are displayed in current Vim, each window
has a customisable status line. How would that work with the
"modern GUI" style?
