I think this sentence describes well the problem:
"For an xterm this depends on your resources, and is a bit
unpredictable."
And actually I didn't notice too that I only had the problem with
TERM=xterm-16color (that I don't use anymore).
It seems that the problem concerns rather xterm than vim. It's a little
strange however that modifying ctermfg also modifies cterm (the contrary
is more common).
