You didn't describe how you tested the differences. Try something like:
(outside of mutt, open what looks like a mutt /tmp file)
vim /tmp/mutt-x-123-12341234
Do you get the problem then?
If not, it's something about the way mutt's configured. If so, it's a
vim issue.
