He's saying that everything is red even after setting the highlight for colorcolumn to black.

To that, in addition to Justin's suggestion that maybe you're not running GUI Vim, I'd suggest that maybe your colorscheme is setting a colorcolumn color. You would need to apply your own color setting after your colorscheme is applied, or modify the colorscheme.
