It also occurs to me that, if you have long lines, and the right
combination of 'wrap', 'listchars' and 'list' set, it would
appear as if 'list' was off, but in reality was on, and the aux
characters you see are defined in 'listchars'.
:help 'wrap'
:help 'listchars'
:help 'list'
Otherwise, if you've truly vetted that 'list' is not set by issuing
:set list?
then I'm pretty sure the character is actually in the file (which
"ga" or a hex-dump would evidence).
