I've answered the question myself. At least mkd works.

But that gives rise to another question: Could I associate other extents with the markdown filetype, e.g., mmd?

I've also been experimenting with Voom with markdown. Very intuitive so far. No need for indents to get nesting of topics. No need to insert hard returns, as in some other outliners. A "header" could be of any length. A paragraph could be a header.

Why would you want to make a paragraph a header? Because I might want to subordinate another body of text -- lines, a paragraph, or several paragraphs -- to a paragraph without artificially introducing a header. As much of the first line of the paragraph as is shown in the tree is sufficient to identify the topic.

Thanks, Vlad.
