blank space to the left of the first column

When I open a particular config file in Vim, I notice two blank
columns to the left of the first column in the file -- the text
is spaced two columns away from the left border of the terminal
(a Linux console in this case).

I haven't noticed this behavior in any other file, & I'm not sure
how it ended up this way...must have accidentally input a command
somewhere along the line. It's actually feature I've been looking
for, so I'd like to figure out what it is & how to replicate it.

TIA for any pointers,

John
